State Tax Abatement Agreements Under Scrutiny by Storey County Legislature

Tesla’s investment in Storey County has brought economic growth and opportunities to the Reno/Sparks metro area. The county acknowledges the strain on infrastructure and costs brought by major corporations like Tesla and is leading a legislative push to require companies qualifying for large tax abatements to help offset government service costs. Senate Bill 69 aims to bring stakeholders to the table for negotiations between corporations and counties. The bill would impact companies investing at least $1 billion in economic development, currently only three in Nevada. Support for the bill comes from the Professional Firefighters of Nevada and the Nevada Association of Counties, while opposition includes the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance and several chambers of commerce. The City of Fernley near the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center also opposes the bill, questioning the need for change in the current successful process of attracting businesses. The bill aims to create a framework for future large companies seeking tax abatements to contribute to the costs of government services in the counties they operate in.
