From anti-drone bazookas to Eurofighters: A look at the impressive security measures at Pope Francis’ funeral

Rome is gearing up for the funeral of Pope Francis, with unprecedented security measures in place. Thousands of police officers, reinforcements from various regions, and security services from 130 foreign delegations will be deployed to ensure safety. The area around the Holy See and the funeral procession route will be protected by air, land, and sea measures, including a Navy destroyer, Eurofighter jets, radar installations, and anti-drone bazookas.

St. Peter’s Square will be fortified with ground clearance, drones for aerial surveillance, and a division of the urban quadrant into five security zones. Sharpshooters, bomb disposal squads, canine units, river police, and fire brigade units will be on high alert to counter any threats.

After the funeral service, the procession will head to Santa Maria Maggiore for the burial of Pope Francis. Contrary to reports, the cortege will not pass through St. Peter’s Square but will follow a designated route indicated by the Questura, passing symbolic places like the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia.

In addition to security measures, a health strategy organized by the Lazio Region will be in place. Ambulances, medical points, rescue teams, units for psychological assistance, and a decontamination team for chemical agents will be deployed along the route. Six advanced medical posts will be set up in crowded areas, and coordination will be handled by Ares 118, the regional health emergency company.

The city is all set to bid farewell to Pope Francis amidst tight security and comprehensive health measures to ensure a safe event for all attendees.
