Nevada Preps: Spring Sports Realignment in Nevada High Schools Underway

Northern Nevada Schools Retain 5A Classification for Spring Sports Amid Southern Dominance

In a decisive move, Northern Nevada high schools will remain in the Class 5A classification for all spring sports, despite the recent supremacy of Southern schools. This decision was made during the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) Realignment Committee meeting held on Wednesday. Representatives from the Northern 5A/4A committee expressed a unified desire to maintain their current status in all spring sports.

The committee has granted preliminary approval for alignment proposals for eight spring sports, which will remain in effect for the next three seasons. Schools will have an opportunity to appeal their placements during a meeting scheduled for May 28. This meeting will also address playoff formats for spring sports and wrestling.

Southern Nevada teams have dominated 5A championships over the past two seasons, winning titles in all seven spring sports, with boys volleyball being the sole Southern-only competition. In response, Northern teams have opted to steer clear of 5A Southern teams in sports like girls soccer and tennis while choosing to return to 5A in girls golf and avoiding the new Open Division postseason in football.

Historically, Northern schools have struggled in baseball, with no state title wins in the top classification since 2004. Recently, the state title games have featured both Northern and Southern teams, with Southern teams winning the last two championships in thrilling fashion.

The alignment proposals have seen changes, particularly in 5A baseball and softball. The number of Southern teams in 5A baseball has increased from nine to 12, incorporating additional schools such as Coronado and Durango. Similarly, 5A softball will expand to include 10 teams with new entrants Green Valley and Doral Academy.
