Press Release: DMV to Offer Walk-In Real ID Services for Nevada Residents Needing Immediate Travel
Las Vegas, NV – Starting next week, Nevada residents with upcoming flights can obtain a Real ID at select DMV offices without an appointment. From Monday, eligible individuals can visit the Sahara, Flamingo, Decatur, and Henderson DMV offices between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. To qualify, customers must show proof of a scheduled commercial flight within the next 45 days.
This initiative aims to address the growing urgency among residents as the deadline for Real ID compliance approaches, initially set by Congress in 2005 and delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. DMV officials report a significant increase in demand, prompting an adjustment in service hours. "There are many misconceptions about who needs a Real ID, and we’re witnessing last-minute panic among those who had assumed the deadline would be extended," stated DMV Director Tonya Laney.
Currently, around 80% of Nevadans possess a Real ID, but the rush has led to the DMV servicing 46,770 customers recently. Starting next week, those without a Real ID, valid military ID, or passport will face issues at security checkpoints in airports and federal buildings. “For those not needing to board a plane or access secure facilities, your existing driver’s license is still valid for all other purposes,” reassured Laney.
This expanded walk-in service follows a previous limited availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays, showcasing the DMV’s commitment to accommodating residents’ needs. For more information, Nevadans can contact Mick Akers at makers@reviewjournal.com or 702-387-2920. Follow @mickakers on X for updates.
