Press Release: Palestinian Ambassador Hails Starmer’s Recognition of Statehood
In a significant development, Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, has described Sir Keir Starmer’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state as a "historic, legal, and democratic gesture." Speaking to Sky News, Zomlot emphasized the importance of this move, particularly in light of Britain’s historical role in the plight of the Palestinian people since the Balfour Declaration of 1917. This letter, sent by then-Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour, expressed support for a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine—a declaration Zomlot believes has led to considerable suffering.
"This is our opportunity to convey deep gratitude on behalf of the Palestinian people for this solidarity," Zomlot stated, asserting that Starmer’s announcement marks the “starting gun” for Palestinian statehood. He underscored that the recognition is not merely symbolic but carries significant moral weight in addressing the injustices faced by Palestinians for nearly a century.
Zomlot stressed the need for immediate action, calling for an end to Israeli settlements on Palestinian land and the enforcement of international law and accountability related to Israel. He highlighted the complexity of addressing the situation in Gaza, arguing that security is the "fruit of peace" rather than a precondition for negotiations. The ambassador attributed the barrier to Palestinian government involvement in Gaza to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Emphasizing the need for the fulfilment of Palestinian rights, he stated, "No matter how much violence Israel deploys against us, our rights will not be undermined." This declaration seeks to galvanize international support as the Palestinian people continue to push for recognition and justice.
