Kenneth Chesebro, a former legal adviser for Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign, has been disbarred from practicing law in New York due to his involvement in efforts to overturn Trump’s electoral defeat. A state appeals court’s recent order highlighted Chesebro’s criminal behavior, specifically conspiring to file false documents related to the election in Georgia, asserting that his actions undermine the fundamental principles of constitutional democracy, which he vowed to uphold as an attorney.
Chesebro, admitted to the New York bar in 2007, had previously reached a plea agreement with Georgia prosecutors in 2023, pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy after facing seven charges. Trump’s own response to the indictment, which included 18 others alongside Chesebro, was a not guilty plea. The legal proceedings experienced delays partly due to Trump’s election victory and the removal of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case.
The court’s disbarment decision reinforces Chesebro’s “cavalier attitude” towards his actions, which stands in stark contrast to his extensive background in constitutional and election law. An official report countered Chesebro’s defense, confirming that he was indeed significantly involved in formulating the plans to overturn the election, substantiating claims that he was the “architect” of these efforts.
Chesebro is not alone; other attorneys associated with Trump’s campaign, such as Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, have also faced disciplinary actions due to their roles in election interference.
