Record Deaths in 2024 Increase Pressure on Lombardo to Approve AB96

Press Release
Governor Faces Pressure to Support Extreme Heat Mitigation Bill Amid Rising Heat-Related Deaths

Las Vegas, NV — A critical piece of legislation aimed at combating the growing threat of extreme heat in Nevada has resurfaced on Governor Joe Lombardo’s desk after previously being vetoed. Assembly Bill 96 mandates that local governments, particularly Clark and Washoe counties, develop comprehensive heat mitigation plans.

The legislation comes in light of alarming statistics revealing that over 500 residents in Clark County died from heat-related causes last year—an increase of 78% from the previous year. “It’s unacceptable to deny the science surrounding this issue,” said Jackie Spicer of the Nevada Environmental Justice Coalition. She emphasized the urgency of addressing extreme heat, connecting rising temperatures to urban development and climate change.

The proposed bill requires counties to establish formal strategies that include public cooling centers, enhanced access to drinking water, shaded infrastructure, and heat-resilient building designs. “When people say, ‘It’s Las Vegas—expect the heat,’ they overlook the reality of human health and safety,” Spicer remarked. She argues that proactive planning is essential for the long-term livability of Nevada.

Supporters believe the bill is crucial for ensuring a safe and sustainable environment for all residents, stressing that inaction would jeopardize the future of the state. “We want to secure a livable Nevada for generations to come,” Spicer concluded.

As the legislative session continues, advocates hope the governor will reconsider his stance and take action to safeguard Nevadans from the increasing dangers posed by extreme heat.
