Latino Caucus Slams Lombardo for Vetoing Bills Impacting Nevada’s Latino Communities

Nevada Latino Caucus Criticizes Governor Lombardo’s Vetoes on Key Latino Protection Bills

Carson City, NV – The Nevada Latino Caucus has voiced strong disapproval following Governor Joe Lombardo’s veto of seven pivotal bills aimed at safeguarding the state’s Latino and immigrant populations. Assemblymember Selena Torres-Fossett criticized the governor for prioritizing "political theater" over the welfare of Nevada’s working families.

Among the vetoed measures were bills intended to establish Dolores Huerta Day, enhance rental fee transparency, impose limits on rent increases, ban ICE activities in schools, and ensure better air quality conditions for workers in large buildings. In his justification for rejecting Dolores Huerta Day, Lombardo pointed to the existing administrative process for proclaiming special days, asserting that no new legislation was necessary.

Despite the setbacks, the Latino Caucus celebrated recent legislative successes that promote equality and opportunity for Latino families. Assemblymember Cecelia González hailed the passage of several bills, notably AB460, the Family Unity Act, which protects children separated from parents due to immigration enforcement. Other significant victories include SB115, which offers stipends to support bilingual educators, and AB335, designed to bolster protections for English language learners.

"We know that when Latino families thrive, all of Nevada thrives," González emphasized, reflecting the caucus’s commitment to promoting a fairer and more inclusive society.

The Nevada Latino Caucus remains dedicated to continuing advocacy efforts in support of the Latino community, emphasizing that the fight for justice and dignity will persist despite political obstacles.
