Reviving the Past: Nevada City Introduces Electronic Parking Payments

Nevada City Explores Modern Parking Solutions Amid Challenges

Nevada City is working to modernize its parking infrastructure with the introduction of mobile payment options and solar-powered meters, but progress is not without hurdles. City Engineer Bryan McAlister provided an update to the city council, highlighting plans to make pilot improvements live by July 7. This includes a recently installed kiosk and five new solar-powered meters on Broad Street that accept both coins and cards.

However, a significant oversight was discovered: the mobile payment feature was not part of the contract with MacKay Meters, the kiosk manufacturer. Councilmember Daniela Hernandez emphasized the importance of integrating modern payment options to enhance the city’s appeal. City staff are now negotiating with ParkMobile to add mobile payment capabilities, enabling users to pay via an app or text, access discounts, and enjoy the convenience of dynamic pricing during busy periods.

Concerns have arisen around the aesthetics and functionality of the new meters, with complaints about their size and usability. The council continues to gather public feedback as they aim to ensure that parking solutions meet community needs. As updates unfold, the city remains committed to balancing modern conveniences with its historic charm.
