Nationwide Anti-ICE Protests Erupt Following Unrest in L.A. as Movement Gains Momentum

Protests against ICE raids and U.S. immigration policies erupted nationwide on Monday following unrest in Los Angeles, with demonstrations planned throughout the week. Activists from New York to Texas participated, with significant rallies set for Tuesday and nationwide events titled “No Kings” scheduled for Saturday. Over the weekend, around 56 people were arrested during Los Angeles protests, where President Trump deployed approximately 2,700 troops in response, prompting California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass to criticize the action as overreach. California has sued the Trump administration, declaring the deployment unlawful.

At least 25 rallies occurred across the U.S., ranging from small gatherings to thousands of participants calling for the release of imprisoned union leader David Huerta. In San Francisco, large protests featured mostly peaceful demonstrations, though some groups engaged in vandalism, leading to arrests. In San Jose, Vanessa Garcia-Morales expressed concern for her family’s safety under current policies, highlighting the personal implications of the immigration enforcement.

In New York, tensions escalated at a rally outside Trump Tower, resulting in several arrests for blocking traffic. Protests also spread to major East Coast cities like Boston and Baltimore. In Texas, at least one arrest was reported in Dallas as a standoff occurred, with hundreds also gathering in San Antonio and at the state Capitol. Officials, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, condemned the protests, while new Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to continued enforcement of immigration laws despite public dissent. Activists emphasize the importance of these demonstrations in light of ongoing ICE actions and their implications for immigrant communities across the nation.
