Live Updates on LA Protests: California Governor and LA Mayor Call for Trump to Withdraw National Guard Troops

California Governor Newsom Demands Rescission of National Guard Deployment Amid Protests

In a serious escalation of tensions, California Governor Gavin Newsom has formally requested that the Trump administration rescind its deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles. Describing the move as "unlawful" and a violation of state sovereignty, Newsom stated, "We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved. This is inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they are genuinely needed.”

Newsom’s statement comes amidst ongoing protests in Los Angeles against recent ICE raids. In a joint condemnation with other Democratic governors, he highlighted the legal authority of governors over their National Guard, insisting that federal activation without consultation is dangerous and ineffective. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, also opposing the deployment, described it as "the last thing Los Angeles needs," urging peaceful protests while simultaneously expressing concerns over community safety.

The protests have intensified, with demonstrators blocking the 101 Freeway and clashes reported between law enforcement and protesters. The LAPD declared the assembly unlawful, utilizing less-lethal munitions to disperse crowds. Many activists voiced that the increased military presence is unnecessary and fear-inducing.

Former presidential nominee Kamala Harris criticized the deployment as a dangerous escalation designed to provoke chaos. Calls have emerged from various leaders, including California Representative Nanette Barragán, urging the Trump administration to withdraw the National Guard, asserting that local law enforcement can manage the situation effectively.

Amid this turbulent climate, President Trump hinted at the potential deployment of active-duty Marines, heightening already fraught sentiments. Newsom condemned this possibility as "deranged," framing it as an act reminiscent of authoritarian governance. The situation in California continues to evolve, presenting critical challenges to state and federal relations.
