Amazon to Close Reno Fulfillment Center Amid Delivery Network Restructuring

Amazon has announced the closure of its fulfillment center in Reno, Nevada, effective August 2, as part of a strategic shift to enhance its delivery network for faster shipping. The decision, revealed in a filing on June 2, impacts 325 employees. Although the facility primarily managed large shipments, Amazon confirmed that this move does not indicate an exit from Reno. Instead, the tech giant is developing a new same-day delivery site in the area, expected to remain under construction until 2026.

Employees affected by the closure will have opportunities to transfer to other locations, with over 100 already securing new roles. Those opting not to switch positions will receive severance, health benefits, and job placement assistance.

CEO Andy Jassy noted the importance of increasing delivery speeds, stating that enhanced same-day delivery options contribute significantly to customer satisfaction and purchase frequency. He highlighted that in 2024, the company experienced noteworthy growth in same- or next-day shipping, processing over 9 billion orders across more than 140 metropolitan areas nationwide. This commitment to speed and efficiency remains a cornerstone of Amazon’s operational strategy.
