Lilly Urban Shines at NCAA West Preliminary, Secures Spot at National Championships
Nevada javelin thrower Lilly Urban made waves at the NCAA West Preliminary, overcoming pressure to clinch a spot in the national championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field. After initial throws of 50.96 and 50.53 meters left her outside a qualifying position, Urban delivered a remarkable final throw of 53.49 meters, landing her in eighth place.
Urban reflected on the stress of the moment, admitting, "I was back in the grass waiting…I kind of freaked out." Coach Scott Williamson shared his nerves but noted Urban’s adjustments were key to her success despite challenging weather conditions, including headwinds.
This season has been historic for Urban. She has broken the school javelin record four times, including her personal best of 56.89 meters at the Mountain West Championship, securing gold and ranking ninth nationally. Currently, she is the first javelin thrower from Nevada to qualify for nationals since 2011.
Williamson’s belief in Urban’s potential dates back to her recruitment from Germany, where he connected with her through Scholar Book. Despite initial pandemic challenges, Urban’s journey brought her to Reno, aided by fellow German athlete and assistant coach Nicola Ader.
Urban is not just representing herself; she is motivated to honor her team and the Wolf Pack community. With family support—including her sister Hannah flying in from Germany for the competition—Urban is ready for the pressure of the national stage.
As she prepares for this major collegiate competition, Urban aims to throw around 55 or 56 meters, aspiring for first-team All-American honors. "I’m proud to stand for the Wolf Pack, and I hope next year more people will join me on the national stage," she said, showcasing her commitment to both individual and team success.
