Canada Champions Quantum Technology at G7 Summit as Economic Catalyst
Canada is set to position quantum technology at the forefront of its 2025 G7 agenda, evident in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement prior to the upcoming Leaders’ Summit scheduled for June 15-17. This strategic move aims to leverage quantum advancements for economic growth, energy security, and digital transition, along with aligning international policies on supply chains and cybersecurity.
The decision follows extensive lobbying efforts from Quantum Industry Canada (QIC) and international partners, who underscored the importance of trusted collaboration in bolstering national security and competitiveness. Carney emphasized that quantum technology, along with artificial intelligence, plays a crucial role in driving the global digital transition and energy resilience.
“This summit marks a moment for Canada to collaborate with reliable partners to tackle challenges with purpose and unity,” Carney stated, highlighting the country’s readiness to lead on the world stage.
As part of the initiative, the global industry summit QUANTUM NOW will take place in Montréal shortly after the G7 gathering, aiming to unify business, investment, and policy strategies for industrial quantum deployment.
QIC CEO Lisa Lambert welcomed the recognition of quantum’s role in building energy security and facilitating digital advancements, noting its convergence with cybersecurity and advanced communication technologies. With quantum technologies already being utilized in various sectors, Canada is positioning itself to spearhead commercialization efforts in defense, infrastructure, and manufacturing.
The G7 declaration also calls for enhanced international cooperation on research, development, and resilient supply chains, crucial due to increasing global competition, particularly from countries like China. Lambert insists, “Canada’s strategic investments have placed us as a global quantum leader, ready to shape the future of technological cooperation and competition.”
