Caliente, Nevada Hit by 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake
CALIENTE, Nevada (ABC4) — An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck Caliente, Nevada, around 1 a.m. on Friday. The epicenter was located approximately 25 miles south-southwest of the town, with a depth of three miles. Despite its moderate intensity, many residents reported feeling the tremor across a radius of nearly 60 miles.
One local resident recounted her experience while baking cookies for a yard sale. “All of a sudden there was a rumbling!” she told ABC4, noting the unsettling difference from the usual sounds of passing trains. Another resident, who has a pet dog frightened by loud noises, initially mistook the quake for Nellis Air Force training activities, describing the shaking as significantly longer than usual sonic booms.
While earthquakes in the region are not unfamiliar, this incident startled the community, reminding them of the natural forces at play. USA Geological Survey data confirmed the earthquake’s details, showing its impact felt well beyond Caliente. Residents expressed a mix of curiosity and concern as they adjusted to the unexpected disturbance in their typically quiet surroundings.
