Nevada Athletic Commission Backs Canelo Alvarez Amid Controversy Over Hand Wrapping Technique
In a swift resolution to a rising controversy in boxing, the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) ruled in favor of Canelo Alvarez following objections raised by Gennady Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, regarding the way Alvarez wraps his hands. Sanchez claimed that Alvarez utilized a method known as "stacking," which he argued is illegal as it may create a cast-like effect.
In an exclusive interview with Yahoo Sports, Sanchez detailed the alleged infraction, stating, “They put the gauze on his hand and then applied tape on top. I immediately flagged it as illegal, but the inspector insisted it was permissible." Tension escalated during the process, with Sanchez facing potential ejection from the room for his objections.
Following the claims, a meeting was held involving Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, Alvarez’s promoter, Eric Gomez, NAC Chairman Anthony Marnell, and Executive Director Bob Bennett. The commission ultimately reaffirmed that Alvarez’s wrapping techniques complied with existing regulations, which allow limited use of surgical bandage and tape. Gomez stated, “Canelo has wrapped his hands this way wherever he has fought. He is doing nothing wrong and is not cheating.”
Loeffler acknowledged ambiguity in the rules but expressed that Golovkin would now move forward positively despite differing interpretations. The commission is also ongoing with its investigation into Alvarez’s prior failed drug tests related to Clenbuterol, which Alvarez attributes to contaminated meat. Gomez assured that Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation.
The ruling puts Alvarez in a favorable position ahead of future bouts, maintaining his image amidst ongoing scrutiny.
