Press Release: Formation of SAF Technology Alliance to Advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Charlotte, NC – In a significant step towards sustainable aviation, Honeywell, Samsung’s engineering subsidiary Samsung E&A, chemicals giant Johnson Matthey, and Gidara Energy have announced the establishment of the SAF Technology Alliance. This strategic coalition aims to revolutionize the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) landscape by integrating advanced technologies and streamlining the production process.
The SAF Technology Alliance seeks to develop a comprehensive, end-to-end production chain that transforms waste feedstocks into viable SAF solutions. Currently, sustainable aviation fuels account for less than 1% of global jet fuel usage—a figure described as "disappointingly slow" by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The alliance plans to leverage gasification and the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process to enhance SAF production efficiency and scalability.
Each member of the alliance brings unique expertise: Gidara specializes in gasification and synthesis gas development, Johnson Matthey focuses on catalysts, Honeywell delivers digital automation technology, and Samsung E&A contributes extensive engineering and project management capabilities. The collaboration is expected to reduce the time from feasibility studies to operational facilities by 15% and capital costs by approximately 10%.
Ken West, CEO of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions, emphasized the alliance’s role in meeting global energy demands, stating, “This comprehensive approach provides refiners with a strategic means to realize their visions.” Johnson Matthey’s CEO Maurits van Tol noted the group’s commitment to accelerating SAF deployment by addressing the common challenges faced by producers.
As airlines increasingly turn to SAF to lower emissions, the SAF Technology Alliance is positioned to play a critical role in boosting availability and accessibility. Despite ongoing investments from major airlines, IATA predicts that SAFs will continue to represent less than 1% of total jet fuel consumption by 2025, underscoring the need for innovation and collaboration.
