Governor Lombardo Issues Vetoes as Legislative Session Concludes
CARSON CITY — Governor Joe Lombardo has exercised his veto power, rejecting several key bills as the Nevada Legislature wrapped up its session on Monday. His actions come as he approaches the possibility of surpassing his previous record of 75 vetoes from last year, with 15 bills already nullified as of Monday night.
Among the notable vetoed legislation was Senate Bill 171, which aimed to implement a shield law to protect the transgender community seeking out-of-state care. Sponsored by Democratic Senator James Ohrenschall of Las Vegas, this bill garnered support from party members but failed to sway the governor, who had previously endorsed similar protections for abortion seekers.
Another significant rejection was Senate Bill 167, prohibiting the sale of household cleaning products tested on animals. The bill had garnered bipartisan support, passing the Senate 17-4, yet faced opposition from certain Republican senators.
Additional bills vetoed include Senate Bill 89, which sought to restrict firearm possession for individuals convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes, and Senate Bill 155, which would have allowed non-U.S. citizens to serve as police officers if they met certain conditions. Both measures also passed along party lines.
Lombardo’s vetoes extended to legislation focused on the care of transgender prisoners and a bill aimed at banning fake electoral certificates, which had been a repeated proposal in both sessions. He also rejected Senate Bill 297, which would have designated October as “Menopause Awareness Month,” emphasizing public health communication on the topic.
With 10 days remaining in the session, the governor will continuing evaluating remaining bills for potential approval or further vetoes.
