University of Guam Professor Showcases Ceramic Artwork at National Exhibition
MASSILLON, OHIO — Drew Ippoliti, an associate professor of art at the University of Guam, is making waves in the national art scene with his ceramic work featured in the exhibition "Juxtaposed: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future," held at the Massillon Museum in Ohio from June 5 to October 12. This exhibition highlights the work of 13 artists connected through their educational journeys, exploring themes like trauma, resilience, and environmental impact.
Ippoliti’s piece, “Once More onto the Breach,” is a hand-built ceramic sculpture that exemplifies cycles of renewal and the transformation of community narratives into art. He emphasizes community interaction in his work, reflecting on his experiences learning about Guam since his arrival just five months prior. “The culture of Guam is so rich, and it presents an opportunity to bring its history to the forefront,” Ippoliti said.
Originally from Massachusetts, Ippoliti has worked extensively in Asia and taught at the University of Akron before joining UOG in January. He aims to use his art to foster connections and cultural understanding among young people. “Art education is vital for building curiosity about various cultures,” he remarked.
The exhibition’s concept emerged from discussions among artists about collaborations, led by guest curator Susan Mentrak. Ippoliti shares the space with fellow graduates from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and other institutions, demonstrating how educational ties inspire lasting artistic communities.
While his work is featured in Ohio, Ippoliti is set to showcase additional pieces at the Guam Museum in July. Through these exhibitions, he hopes to inspire the local community, encouraging recognition of global connections and opportunities.
The Massillon Museum exhibition opens with a reception on June 5, featuring several artists in a virtual talk on October 2. Admission is free, allowing a wider audience to appreciate Ippoliti’s impactful work.
