Yeager: Special Session Likely Following Finalized Federal Cuts

Nevada Assembly Speaker Yeager Anticipates Special Legislative Session Amid Federal Budget Concerns

Nevada Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager indicated that a special session of the Legislature may be necessary later this year due to potential cuts in federal appropriations. In an interview on Nevada Newsmakers, Yeager expressed concern about the implications of budget reductions from Congress, which could impact essential state programs including Medicaid and education. Yeager, a Democrat, remains cautiously optimistic that the political climate leading up to the November elections might protect Nevada’s funding.

Federal funds comprise a significant portion—27.7%—of Nevada’s $53.4 billion budget. Yeager highlighted that preparation for a special session in September or October is underway, although he hopes these discussions can be deferred until after the upcoming election season.

He also commented on the need for collaboration among state leaders to navigate pressing issues like education reforms and budgetary constraints, especially considering a recent complex education bill proposed by the governor. Yeager called for open communication among lawmakers to foster understanding and unity as they approach the session deadlines, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing state funding responsibilities over increasing the Rainy Day Fund during uncertain economic times.
