Governor Joe Lombardo Tackles Legislative Bills as Veto Season Begins
As Nevada’s legislative session wraps up, Governor Joe Lombardo has already made headlines with his extensive use of veto power, breaking the record for the most vetoed bills in a single session. With the session ending June 2, Lombardo has swiftly vetoed Assembly Bill 306, which sought to expand ballot drop box accessibility, while signing several bills related to local tax extensions.
Among the notable bills awaiting the governor’s signature is Assembly Bill 50, which proposes the creation of a database for identifying and reuniting victims of mass casualty events, a response to the challenges faced during the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Clark County Fire Chief Billy Samuels, who advocates for this measure, emphasized the need for better victim information management.
Another significant piece of legislation is Assembly Bill 245, aimed at preventing individuals under 21 from purchasing semiautomatic firearms. Despite passing along party lines, critics point out that Governor Lombardo previously vetoed a similar bill, citing constitutional issues.
Senate Bill 167 seeks to ban animal testing for household cleaning products, exempting cases where non-animal testing is unavailable. This bill received bipartisan support in both chambers and is poised for the governor’s review.
Additionally, Assembly Bill 148 aims to streamline the voting process by requiring sample ballots to be mailed ahead of official mail ballots, addressing confusion experienced in previous elections.
Lastly, bills such as AB 235, which protects reproductive health care providers’ confidentiality, and AB 205, which changes how students can opt out of sex education, reflect ongoing debates about personal rights and educational policy.
As Lombardo continues to evaluate these bills, political analysts are left to ponder whether he will further broaden his record of vetoes.
