Nevada Officials Confirm State Is Not a Sanctuary
In a recent clarification, both Republican and Democratic leaders in Nevada have stated that the state does not identify as a sanctuary state. Governor Joe Lombardo emphasized, “Nevada is not a sanctuary state or jurisdiction,” while Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford echoed this stance, stating, “I do not support sanctuary policies.” Notably, major cities like Las Vegas and Reno also do not claim to be sanctuary cities.
The term “sanctuary state” lacks a legal definition but typically refers to states that implement policies limiting local officials from inquiring about immigration status or restricting law enforcement’s ability to execute federal immigration laws. Major think tanks and even conservative immigration organizations, such as the Center for Immigration Studies, have agreed that Nevada does not fit the criteria for sanctuary status.
This information has emerged in response to increasing discussions around immigration policies in the state. The Nevada Independent, in collaboration with Gigafact, continues to provide fact briefs that address trending claims, ensuring transparency and clarity on contentious issues.
