University of Nevada Announces New GSR Arena Plans
The University of Nevada’s men’s basketball team will transition to the new GSR Arena set to open in 2027, while the women’s team will continue to play at Lawlor Events Center, which has been their home for 41 years. The Reno Redevelopment Agency Board approved over $60 million in tax-increment financing for the $435 million arena project. Construction is slated to begin in June, with completion expected by the 2027-28 season.
Although the university will not finance the arena’s construction, it will incur per-game fees for the men’s team. University President Brian Sandoval indicated the women’s team faces economic challenges playing at the GSR, as they average only about 600 fans per game, making it financially unfeasible.
Sandoval also expressed commitment to women’s athletics, having supported initiatives like the Alpha Fund for team meals and improving coaching salaries. He acknowledged Lawlor’s outdated facilities but aims to generate more events there, despite its declining appeal. Anticipating an increase in revenue from the move to GSR, Sandoval noted additional opportunities for local businesses and a vibrant fan experience.
“Enhancing our athletic department will positively impact our university,” he stated, emphasizing his responsibility to improve campus interests.
