Local Swimmers Shine at State Championships
The high school state swim and dive championships, held at the newly opened Moana Springs Community Aquatics and Fitness Center, showcased stellar performances from local athletes across the 5A and 3A classifications. The southern teams claimed three of the four team championships, while Truckee’s girls continued their impressive dominance, securing their fourth consecutive title in the 3A division.
Among the standout individual performances was Reed senior Hunter Dawson, who made headlines by shattering a 36-year-old state record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.50, breaking the previous mark of 20.89 set in 1989. Dawson, committed to Seattle University, also clinched the title in the 100-yard freestyle, marking a successful continuation of his prowess from 2024.
Sage Ridge’s Zach Power, an SMU commit, captured two championships, triumphing in the 100-yard butterfly for a record-setting fourth straight year and the 500-yard freestyle. Truckee’s Lance Wogsland turned heads with a thrilling victory in the 50-yard freestyle, overcoming a slower qualifying heat to seize the title.
On the girls’ side, Reno’s Addison Sala also had an outstanding meet, winning the 200-yard individual medley for the third consecutive year. The junior, set to attend Alabama next fall, added a win in the 100-yard backstroke. Additionally, McQueen’s Shayne Patrick concluded her high school career on a high note, earning her first state championship in the 100-yard butterfly after finishing third last year.
