Nevada Education Reform Bill Set for Initial Hearing
Las Vegas, NV – May 18, 2025 – A significant education reform proposal, Senate Bill 460, will have its first hearing on Monday at the Nevada Legislature. Sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, this comprehensive 104-page bill focuses on accountability, transparency, and efficiency in K-12 education.
The bill proposes a $317 million appropriation, including $250 million for continuing teacher pay raises initiated in 2023, and outlines reforms aimed at improving student outcomes. Key elements include the establishment of a School District Oversight Board, which could take control of local school boards failing to comply with state laws, and provisions allowing school boards to reject charter school placements that do not serve community needs.
Aiming to enhance staffing protocols, SB 460 sets minimum qualifications for superintendent and chief financial officer candidates and mandates negotiations for salary incentives tied to professional development.
Controversy looms as Republican Governor Joe Lombardo champions a competing bill, Assembly Bill 584, focused on school board and principal accountability but more favorable to charter schools. The governor insists he will not support an education budget without adequate provisions for charter school educators.
The stakes are high as both parties strive to reshape Nevada’s educational landscape within a week of critical hearings.
