Reno Huskies Fall to Basic Wolves in 5A State Baseball Final
In a thrilling matchup at Peccole Park, the Reno Huskies narrowly lost to the Basic Wolves, 3-2, in the 5A state baseball championship game, which extended into eight innings. Basic struck first, hitting a solo home run in the second inning before Reno responded in the third with a key RBI single from Logan Ford, evening the game at 1-1. Huskies junior Mac Vandergrift then secured Reno’s first lead with another RBI single in the fourth, making it 2-1.
A lightning delay briefly interrupted the game, but Basic regrouped after the break. In the sixth inning, Lyndon Lee’s single brought in the tying run, sending the game into extra innings. The drama escalated as Basic loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. A wild pitch allowed Lee to score the winning run, granting the Wolves their first large-class state title since 2022.
Reno’s defeat marks their second consecutive loss in the state finals. Huskies head coach Pete Savage expressed pride in his team’s resilience. "I was really proud of our kids… they left everything on the field,” he told Nevada Sports Net. He praised his players and coaching staff for their dedication throughout the season, emphasizing their strong pitching performance. “Darrel Dalen is an absolute warrior," Savage noted, highlighting the contributions of his team members, including Troy Riley, Vandergrift, and Tate Robertson.
In other championship news, Truckee secured the 3A state title by edging The Meadows 4-3, while Fernley claimed the 3A softball championship by defeating Churchill County in back-to-back games. These victories marked significant milestones for both programs.
