Senate Republican Critiques Meta’s Response to Sexual Harassment Allegations

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has requested information from Meta regarding historical sexual harassment allegations, specifically those involving executive Joel Kaplan. This inquiry follows allegations detailed in Sarah Wynn-Williams’ memoir, “Careless People,” which accuses Kaplan of sending sexually harassing emails and retaliating against her after she reported him. Grassley’s letter seeks details on alleged sexual misconduct by company leadership since 2010 and associated workplace training materials.

Meta’s response highlights that an internal investigation in 2017 cleared Kaplan of wrongdoing, asserting that the allegations against him were without merit. The company claims Wynn-Williams was fired due to documented performance issues, and insists she is the only individual to lodge such allegations against Kaplan in his 14-year tenure.

Wynn-Williams’ memoir, which explores her experiences at Meta, ignited scrutiny over the company’s handling of workplace misconduct and whistleblower protections. In a recent Senate proceedings, Wynn-Williams testified about her experiences, finding support from lawmakers discontented with Meta’s policies and actions. Grassley has expressed concern over potential bullying towards Wynn-Williams, advocating for her rights as a whistleblower.

In his correspondence, Grassley referenced emails from Kaplan, including remarks considered inappropriate and offensive. Meta has not contested the content of these emails but argues they were not raised during the initial investigation. Meanwhile, Wynn-Williams asserts the internal review was inadequate and that she provided insufficient documentation because Meta rushed the process. Her attorney stated that she stands firmly behind her allegations, emphasizing the seriousness of the misconduct she reported.
