Federal agents’ investigation into New York City Mayor Eric Adams remained active just days before Justice Department leaders ordered prosecutors to drop the case, according to newly unsealed court documents. The investigation, which began in August 2021—before Adams became mayor—focused on allegations of improper campaign contributions and influence-peddling, including receiving free travel from a Turkish diplomat. Adams contends that the prosecution stemmed from his later criticisms of President Biden’s immigration policies.
The investigation gained public attention in November 2023 when FBI agents seized Adams’ electronics during an event. He was charged ten months later with accepting illegal campaign contributions. However, on February 10, shortly after Donald Trump assumed the presidency, the Justice Department instructed New York prosecutors to abandon the case, arguing it impeded Adams’ ability to support the administration’s immigration policies. This directive led to resignations among several prosecutors, including the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, who refused to comply.
Despite the federal order to halt the case, investigations were advancing, with indications of potential additional charges for obstruction of justice against Adams. The unsealed documents revealed ongoing efforts to gather evidence, including warrants to search homes linked to Adams and his partner, Tracey Collins, for electronic devices associated with the investigation.
Although the charges were dropped, Adams announced plans to run as an independent in the upcoming elections, bypassing the Democratic primary. Adams maintains a cordial relationship with Trump, reinforcing that the dismissal of his case is a significant political turning point, though his future as mayor remains uncertain.
