Just days after becoming the first American Pope in history, Illinois native Pope Leo XIV is gearing up for a reunion with his brother, John Prevost, in Rome. This momentous occasion follows Pope Leo’s election during the 2025 papal conclave. The Dolton native’s historic role marks a significant milestone for both the Catholic Church and the city of Chicago.
Prevost, who has traveled to Rome five times, has previously visited the city twice with his brother. He shared the news of his upcoming trip with Pope Leo in a brief phone call, stating, “I told him we were coming. He said, ‘Oh, okay.’” Reflecting on the pride associated with his brother’s achievement, Prevost expressed how their parents would be “happy and ecstatic” about Pope Leo’s groundbreaking role. He emphasized the importance of this historic moment: “First from the United States, first from Chicago,” he noted, while acknowledging the tremendous responsibility that comes with such a position, particularly the global scrutiny that Pope Leo will face.
As for his plans in Rome, Prevost mentioned that details are still being figured out. He and Pope Leo are expected to have lunch together and may visit special locations, but specific arrangements are still uncertain since their time in the city is limited until Tuesday. Importantly, Prevost clarified that he does not intend to stay for Pope Leo’s official installation ceremony.
