Nevada Baseball Soars After Back-to-Back Walk-Off Wins
Nevada baseball has entered a thrilling phase in the Mountain West Conference, achieving back-to-back walk-off victories against Fresno State, propelling the team to a three-way tie for the top spot in the conference alongside Fresno State and New Mexico. With a season record of 29-19 overall and 15-9 in the MW, the Wolf Pack is poised for a potential share of the MW regular-season title as they head into a crucial series against San Diego State this weekend.
Head coach Jake McKinley praised Fresno State and New Mexico as formidable opponents, underscoring the importance of winning against a well-rounded team. "Winning three games against a talented team like Fresno is definitely good for confidence,” he noted while maintaining a cautious approach to avoid overconfidence.
This season presents a chance for Nevada to not only vie for its first MW regular-season title since 2021 but also to secure a spot in the MW Tournament after falling short last season due to tiebreakers. As six teams qualify for this year’s tournament, the stakes are high for both Nevada and San Diego State, who are tied with San Jose State and Air Force at the bottom of the standings.
McKinley emphasized focusing on each game, stating, “The game in front is the most important game." This weekend, the Wolf Pack will honor nine seniors, including prominent players Michael Ball and Casey Burfield, who reflect on their transformative journeys at Nevada.
Burfield expressed gratitude for the community and memories, while Ball shared his growth during his time at the university, citing the decision to stay after considering leaving in the past. As they prepare for this pivotal matchup, the Wolf Pack is geared up for an exciting finish to the season.
