Nevada Bill Aims to Cap Insulin Costs at $35
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager (D-Clark County) has proposed Assembly Bill 555, which seeks to cap monthly insulin prices at $35 for patients with private health insurance in Nevada. Introduced with less than a month remaining in the 2025 legislative session, the bill has been referred to the Assembly’s Commerce & Labor Committee for review.
Yeager emphasized the importance of the legislation, citing personal stories from residents struggling with exorbitant insulin costs. He noted instances of parents skipping doses for their children and seniors stretching supplies to manage expenses. "This is unacceptable," Yeager declared, asserting that the new cap will bring relief to the tens of thousands living with diabetes in Nevada.
Currently, 26 states and the District of Columbia have similar caps, following trends initiated by the Inflation Reduction Act, which limited costs for Medicaid patients to $35 per month. Yeager expressed optimism about passing the legislation, which he hopes will be signed by Republican Governor Joe Lombardo.
Barb Hartzel, whose daughter has Type 1 diabetes, spoke at the news conference, stressing that insulin is essential and families often face difficult financial choices regarding their healthcare. The bill aims to alleviate such burdens and ensure that no one has to choose between life-saving medication and basic necessities.
