Trump and Vance Prefer Non-Intervention as India and Pakistan Edge Closer to Conflict

Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, concerns of an all-out war are rising following unprecedented violence attributed to a recent terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. On April 22, a deadly incident led India to conduct military strikes against what it described as terrorist camps in Pakistan, resulting in around forty deaths and heightened hostilities. Pakistan denied involvement in the attack and claimed it downed five Indian fighter jets during subsequent clashes, which India has not confirmed.

The conflict has extended to broader societal implications, including the suspension of cricket matches, a beloved sport in both nations, due to security fears. Cross-border shelling has intensified, leading civilians to evacuate near the Line of Control in Kashmir, a disputed territory claimed by both countries. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in discussions with officials from both nations, expressing condolences for the civilian casualties and reiterating the U.S.’s commitment to combating terrorism. However, Indian officials emphasized that mediation is unnecessary, asserting that Pakistan must stop supporting terrorist groups.

While President Trump expressed a desire for peace, the U.S. has maintained a cautious stance, recognizing the complexities of the situation. Lisa Curtis, an expert on South Asia, noted that U.S. relations with Pakistan have deteriorated, potentially limiting Washington’s influence. Despite the calls for investigations into the recent terrorist acts, both countries continue to blame each other, with India accusing Pakistan of harboring militants, a charge Islamabad refutes. The ongoing conflict underscores the enduring volatility over Kashmir, which has been a flashpoint for multiple wars between the two nations since 1947.
