Washoe County Teacher Crowned 2025 National Teacher of the Year
In a remarkable achievement, Makenzie Caufield, a dedicated third-grade teacher from the Washoe County School District, has been named the 2025 National Teacher of the Year by Teachers of Tomorrow, the country’s largest alternative teacher certification program. This prestigious honor follows her recognition as Nevada Teacher of the Year earlier this year.
Prior to her teaching career, Caufield worked in child protective services, a background that enriches her commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment. "Ultimately, my goal is to not only improve as an educator but also to create a lasting impact on my students by equipping them with the skills and confidence they need to succeed," she stated.
As the national winner, Caufield will receive a $5,000 award, which she intends to invest in professional development courses and hands-on learning resources for her students. Each state Teacher of the Year also received $500 for classroom supplies and professional development, with finalists chosen through a public vote in April.
Over the past two decades, Teachers of Tomorrow has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to aspiring teachers and has recognized outstanding educators since 2017 with a total of $60,000 in Teacher of the Year prizes.
