Local Leaders Rally Against Public Land Sales in Nevada
RENO, Nev. — Community leaders, environmental advocates, and residents convened at the Washoe County Complex on Thursday to oppose Representative Mark Amodei’s recent decision to sell approximately 450,000 acres of public land across Nevada. This controversial move forms part of a reconciliation package by the House Natural Resources Committee, aimed at slashing perceived government waste.
Olivia Tanager, Executive Director of the Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter, condemned the plan, asserting that it would pave the way for developers to acquire public land in order to fund tax breaks for affluent individuals. “We’re here today to fight back against that,” she stated. Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill echoed her concerns, warning that these sales would divert public lands to wealthy buyers, neglecting alternative bills aimed at conservation and community development.
While Amodei argues that the land sales are necessary to address housing demands in a state where 80% of land is federally owned, critics highlight the amendment’s failure to involve public input. Advocates have vowed to continue their struggle against these sales, emphasizing their commitment to protect Nevada’s natural resources.
