Press Release: New Congressional Wild Horse Caucus Launched for Humane Treatment
Rep. Dina Titus announced the formation of the Congressional Wild Horse Caucus on Thursday, aimed at promoting humane treatment and effective management of wild horses and burros, particularly in Nevada, where over 30,000 of these animals reside. Titus emphasized the significance of these creatures, stating they are "icons of the American West" deserving of compassionate care.
"Nevada is home to more than half of the wild horses and burros in the United States," Titus noted, underscoring the urgent need for federal policies that ensure their welfare. The bipartisan caucus, co-chaired by Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), and Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.), aims to cultivate better management practices through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
Since taking office in 2013, Titus has been a staunch advocate for animal welfare, previously introducing legislation to halt BLM’s controversial helicopter roundups of wild horses and proposing alternative solutions like fertility control. She hopes the new caucus will boost awareness within Congress about humane and effective management strategies for these animals.
The formation of the caucus signals a growing bipartisan recognition of the need to address the welfare of wild horses and burros in the U.S., particularly as their populations face various challenges. Titus is committed to ensuring these majestic animals receive the respect and care they deserve.
