Pac-12 and Mountain West Set for Legal Mediation This Month

Nevada Sports Net Morning Download: Key Headlines for May 18

As part of Nevada Sports Net’s weekday recap, here are the three significant stories shaping sports today.

1. Pac-12 and Mountain West Mediation Scheduled
According to a report by Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, the Pac-12 and Mountain West conferences will enter mediation on May 19 regarding legal disputes. The mediation’s duration remains unspecified, and a mediator has not yet been appointed. Central to the discussions are exit fees estimated at $95 million owed by five Mountain West schools—Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Colorado State, and Utah State—who will join the Pac-12 in the 2025-26 season. The Pac-12 also faces a $55 million poaching penalty, which they argue hinders their ability to prioritize student-athlete welfare.

2. Wolf Pack Softball Preps for MW Tournament
Nevada’s softball team will kick off their Mountain West Tournament campaign today at 3 p.m. against Boise State, who recently defeated Utah State 6-0 to advance. The Wolf Pack, who won two out of three matchups against Boise this season, aim for their first conference tournament championship since joining the league in 2012. A win would secure them an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, though they also have aspirations for an at-large bid. All tournament games will be streamed live on Nevada Sports Net.

3. TJ Friedl Shines with Career-Best Performance
Former Nevada baseball star TJ Friedl made headlines with a two-homer game for the Cincinnati Reds in their 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves. This marked the third occurrence of Friedl hitting two homers in a single game throughout his five-year MLB career. After facing injury challenges last season, the 29-year-old has been productive, boasting a .273 batting average and participating in 35 of the Reds’ first 38 games this year.
