New Pope’s Social Media Activity Reveals Insights Into His Political Views

The election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XVI has stirred mixed reactions, particularly due to his social media history. Before becoming pope, Prevost utilized platforms like X to express views, including criticisms of former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, highlighting concerns over immigration and social justice. His posts included a condemnation of Trump and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele for laughing about a deportation case and criticisms of Vance’s remarks on prioritizing love for those close to us over others, directly countering the notion of Christian love.

Prevost’s social media activity indicated support for immigrant rights and calls for action against gun violence. After the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, he shared a comment urging Congress to prioritize action over thoughts and prayers. He also expressed solidarity with Dreamers, advocating for a fair immigration system. Despite his previously critical posts, many conservative commentators quickly labeled him, with figures like Laura Loomer branding him a “Marxist puppet,” while others like Charlie Kirk expressed mixed feelings, focusing on his positions on immigration and social issues.

In contrast, more moderate and liberal figures, including former Presidents Bush and Biden, offered congratulations, recognizing his election as a pivotal moment for Catholics in America and globally. Within hours of his election, Prevost gained over 200,000 new followers on X, but his overall social media presence remains limited, suggesting a more comprehensive picture of his political stance is still evolving as he assumes leadership of the Catholic Church.
