Nevada Women’s Golf Wraps Up Season with Promising Insights for Future
The Nevada women’s golf season concluded on April 17, marking the completion of the Wolf Pack’s campaign. This year-end report card reviews their performance amidst expectations and challenges.
Preseason, Nevada aimed to build on a respectable finish of 93rd nationally, following a near NCAA Tournament appearance the previous year. With the loss of standout Leah John to graduation, the team focused on finding a new leader.
Despite not having an official record due to competing in 10 events with no overall team standings, Nevada secured two top-five finishes, highlighted by a strong third-place finish at the Mountain West Championship. The Wolf Pack began the tournament ranked sixth and made a remarkable push to third, finishing just seven strokes behind first-place UNLV.
Gabby Kano emerged as the standout player. A junior, she achieved second-team All-Mountain West recognition, with an adjusted scoring average of 72.9 across 29 rounds. Her notable performances included fourth place at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational and a tie for first at a U.S. Women’s Open qualifier.
Despite an uneven performance in the fall, where the team struggled to break into the top half of most tournaments, they concluded the season strong, securing third at the MW Championship, marking just the second time in school history that Nevada finished in the top three at this event.
The season’s overall grade is a C+, reflecting challenges in finding a consistent top player after John’s departure. Only Raesa Sheikh is set to depart from the roster, providing hope for better performance in the 2024-25 season. The Wolf Pack’s national ranking dropped to 103rd, but with Kano’s U.S. Open entry and a relatively stable lineup, the future looks brighter for Nevada women’s golf.
