Republicans Move to Sell Public Lands to Finance Tax Cuts
WASHINGTON — The House Natural Resources Committee has approved a contentious proposal to sell approximately 11,000 acres of public land in Utah and Nevada, aiming to fund President Donald Trump’s tax reforms. In a 26-17 vote, predominantly along party lines, the committee advanced this amendment, which is part of a larger budget reconciliation bill intended to streamline Trump’s policy agenda.
The proposal specifically targets areas in Washington and Beaver counties in Utah, which have become increasingly landlocked and burdened by federal regulations, according to Utah Rep. Celeste Maloy. "These counties are growing quickly but are hindered by endless red tape," Maloy stated, emphasizing the need for local development.
Approximately 63% of Utah’s land is federally owned, the highest of any state except Nevada. Proponents argue that selling these public lands could help reduce the national deficit and support infrastructure development. However, the intent and potential regulations regarding these sales remain unclear.
Democrats have voiced strong opposition, with Rep. Jared Huffman denouncing the late-night introduction of the amendment as undermining legislative integrity. Public lands advocacy groups have similarly condemned the move, alleging it’s a scheme to finance tax breaks for the wealthy. "Rep. Maloy is hell-bent on selling off public lands," stated Travis Hammill, a director for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.
Despite widespread criticism, the push for public land sales aligns with broader GOP objectives, including increased energy production and affordable housing, as noted by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. However, the proposal may spark resistance from some Republicans who traditionally oppose land sales. As the reconciliation package progresses, it’s uncertain whether the amendment will survive legislative scrutiny, particularly from within the GOP ranks.
