Bay Area’s OceanWell Innovates New Technology for Safer Desalination Methods

Press Release: Innovative Desalination Technology Offers Hope for California’s Water Crisis

MENLO PARK, Calif. — A groundbreaking technology currently in development promises to transform California’s dwindling water resources. Amid soaring costs for water storage and recycling, traditional desalination methods—known for their environmental controversy—face stiff opposition. However, a startup named OceanWell is aiming to change the narrative.

Dr. Tim Quinn, a seasoned water manager, highlights the difficulties in the existing desalination landscape. “Every step in traditional desalination is hugely fraught with controversy,” he explained. With only a handful of operational plants, including the prominent Carlsbad facility in San Diego, the challenge remains in gaining approval for new projects.

OceanWell is introducing a revolutionary approach that focuses on environmental safety. Their system employs a network of underwater pods, strategically positioned over 1,000 feet deep. Utilizing natural water pressure, these pods push saltwater through specialized membranes, enabling the extraction of fresh water while ensuring brine is safely dissipated.

“By operating at such depths, we avoid disrupting marine life typically found in the surface layers. Instead, we draw water from the aphotic zone, significantly reducing ecological impact,” stated Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Haswell.

The company has implemented safeguards to trap marine organisms, enabling a cleaner intake process. A prototype is currently being tested in Southern California, and OceanWell hopes to establish a fully operational water farm offshore within the next three to five years, potentially generating millions of gallons of fresh water daily.

"This innovative technology is crucial for addressing water scarcity, especially in the context of climate change," Quinn noted. As California grapples with ongoing droughts, OceanWell’s scalable solution could be key to securing a sustainable water supply for the future. With the promise of climate-proof adaptability, this technological leap could indeed revolutionize California’s water management landscape.
