Black Designers Shine at the Historic Met Gala Celebration
In a groundbreaking display of Black excellence, the Met Gala made history on Monday night with its inaugural event dedicated to Black history, style, and fashion. A notable highlight was the participation of prominent Black designers and stylists who showcased their creativity on the iconic blue carpet.
Musician Pharrell Williams, now Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director, hit the mark by designing bold looks for several attendees. Sabrina Carpenter humorously commented on her outfit’s complexity, remarking on the challenges it posed. Fashion powerhouse Balmain, led by Olivier Rousteing, also made a significant impact, dressing stars like Jeremy O. Harris, Priyanka Chopra, and Rosalía, while also crafting a stunning gown for the legendary Diana Ross.
Lewis Hamilton and FKA Twigs turned heads in designs by Grace Wales Bonner, celebrated for her unique fusion of sportswear and tailoring. "The ivory represents purity," Hamilton noted, explaining the symbolism behind his outfit. He emphasized the cultural homage woven into his attire, highlighting African heritage through adornment.
Quinta Brunson dazzled in a look inspired by the iconic Josephine Baker, designed by Sergio Hudson, who boasted that this year he dressed 16 people. Emerging designer Bishme Cromartie, a "Project Runway" winner, showcased two styles, including one for entertainment reporter Zuri Hall.
Tributes to the late Virgil Abloh, LVMH creative director and Off-White founder, were prevalent, with La La Anthony and Pharrell Williams among those honoring his legacy. The spotlight also shone on stylists, including Law Roach, who graced the carpet solo this time, and Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, who styled Gigi Hadid in a dress that echoed classic Hollywood designer Zelda Wynn Valdes.
The Met Gala’s celebration not only elevated Black fashion but also marked a pivotal moment in recognizing the contributions of Black artists to the fashion industry.
