Press Release: Students Shine at Giant Farmers Market
Minden Elementary School students showcased their entrepreneurial spirit at the Giant Student Farmers Market held in May 2024 at Fuji Park. Organized by Green Our Planet, a nonprofit dedicated to garden-based education, the event will return on May 15, offering fresh produce and student-crafted goods.
This year’s market will feature produce grown from seed to harvest by 150 students from 15 schools. Woody Worthington, Green Our Planet’s senior director of government affairs, praised the dedication of students who invest hard work into their agricultural projects. "They are amazing little farmpreneurs," he remarked.
Last year’s market saw participation from over 500 students across 60 schools, raising $22,000 for school gardens. Green Our Planet collaborates with about 400 schools, enhancing financial literacy and agricultural knowledge among students. Recent studies indicated that 93% of participants improved in STEM education, while 83% exhibited better engagement and healthy habits.
Students from Carson City’s Eagle Valley Middle School are particularly enthusiastic about showcasing their hydroponic-grown produce, including lettuce and herbs. Programs like these strengthen connections to family and community, nurturing invaluable skills while transforming lives through agriculture.
