Nevada Softball Aims for Hixson Park Upgrade Following MW Title
The Nevada softball team’s recent Mountain West regular-season championship has ignited hopes for significant upgrades at Hixson Park. After securing the title, Nevada is in line to host the 2026 conference tournament, pending approval from the Mountain West’s joint council. This opportunity hinges on one crucial element: the installation of lights—an amenity that has been absent since Hixson Park opened in 2007.
Reflecting on a similar situation, Boise State, after clinching the 2022 championship, managed to host the tournament in 2023 after receiving a seven-figure donation for lights. Nevada is now actively pursuing funding for its lights installation as it anticipates hosting the next tournament in what would be a $1 million-plus project. Last year, the team received a new $2.9 million artificial playing surface, but more investment is needed for additional upgrades.
"We’ve invested in the field, but clearly, we need more," stated Nevada athletic director Stephanie Rempe. She emphasized the necessity for indoor facilities and a clubhouse to solidify Nevada as a competitive softball destination. The strong community support and enthusiasm are apparent, with fans frequently exceeding capacity at games.
The recent championship has added urgency to the funding efforts for phase two of Hixson Park’s renovation, which prominently features the lighting system. Nevada’s president, Brian Sandoval, expressed hope that the community will rally to support these upgrades, stating, “Getting lights here is the next big thing and opportunity.” With the foundation laid and community enthusiasm growing, the Wolf Pack is determined to enhance its facility and capitalize on its success in the Mountain West Conference.
