Nevada Legislators Face $191 Million Revenue Shortfall
Carson City, NV – Last week, Nevada lawmakers were confronted with a projected $191 million shortfall in state revenues for the next two years, complicating the budget discussions as they head toward the end of the 2025 Legislative session. The Economic Forum’s forecast did not account for a nearly $160 million deficit in the State Education Fund, leading to tough decisions on funding crucial programs.
Assemblymember Shea Backus emphasized the need for prioritization, stating that the legislature aims to use state funds effectively for the benefit of Nevadans. Unlike the previous session, which enjoyed a budget surplus due to COVID-19 recovery funds, this year presents significant challenges.
Governor Joe Lombardo has indicated education is his top priority, along with health care and public safety, affirming his commitment to maintaining essential services without laying off employees.
As legislators prepare to make critical decisions regarding which bills will progress, Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro noted that proposals with high fiscal impacts will undergo rigorous scrutiny. The looming financial uncertainties raise concerns about future federal funding cuts that could further exacerbate the state’s budget challenges.
