Tesla Expands Workforce to Boost Semi Truck Production
(The Center Square) — Electric car giant Tesla has hired 1,000 new employees at its Sparks Gigafactory in Nevada to accelerate the manufacturing of its long-awaited semi trucks. After facing multiple delays, the company is now prepared to ramp up production, with CEO Elon Musk stating that mass production is expected to begin in 2026.
The 5.4 million-square-foot facility has seen a significant investment, totaling $6.2 billion since its inception in 2014, and currently employs about 11,000 workers. However, in April 2024, Tesla implemented a mass layoff of nearly 700 employees, part of a broader plan to reduce its global workforce by 10% across 140,000 employees.
Initially unveiled in 2017, the Tesla Semi has faced numerous production challenges, with its first deliveries occurring only in 2022. Despite Musk’s promise of 50,000 units produced by 2024, the production timeline remains uncertain. Major corporations, including Costco, Walmart, and UPS, have already placed orders for the all-electric truck, which boasts a range of 500 miles per charge.
In a related initiative, Tesla plans to open 46 "Megachargers" by 2027, capable of charging the semi trucks to 70% capacity in just 30 minutes. Tesla did not respond to requests for comment.
