Nevada Lawmakers Propose Resolution to Protect Immigrant Communities
In a significant move aimed at safeguarding immigrant populations, Nevada lawmakers held a hearing on Thursday to discuss Assembly Joint Resolution 9. This resolution calls for Congress to prohibit immigration enforcement in sensitive areas, such as churches and schools. Assemblymember Cecelia González, who sponsored the resolution, highlighted the deepening fear among immigrant communities, prompting its formulation in collaboration with the ACLU of Nevada.
González reported that the measure is a direct response to community concerns regarding similar bills being presented in the legislature, including AB460 and AB217. These bills aim to restrict Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in educational institutions, though notably they do not extend protections to public colleges and universities. González shared that the atmosphere of fear has led some families to consider self-deportation, and schools have noted a decline in enrollment as a result.
The resolution is designed to communicate a strong opposition from Nevada lawmakers against immigration crackdowns in these vulnerable settings. It has gained traction and will be forwarded to the Senate for further consideration.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to creating a safe environment for all residents, emphasizing the state’s stance on compassionate immigration policies amid escalating national tensions.
