Nevada’s "Death With Dignity" Bill Faces Uphill Battle Despite Bipartisan Support
In a significant push for medical reform, freshman Assemblymember Joe Dalia (D-Henderson) is leading efforts to pass the “Death With Dignity” bill (AB346) in the Nevada Legislature, which would permit physician-assisted suicides in terminally ill patients. Despite Governor Joe Lombardo’s strong opposition and vows to veto the bill, Dalia remains undeterred.
The proposed legislation mirrors similar laws found in 11 states, including California and Colorado. Dalia, fueled by personal tragedy—having witnessed his father’s painful death from COPD—articulates a deep sense of urgency, stating, "If I don’t get this passed, folks are going to die badly for the next two years."
The bill has gained traction, securing bipartisan support with three Republican votes during a recent Assembly floor vote. Dalia’s co-sponsor, Assemblymember Danielle Gallant (R-Las Vegas), previously opposed the measure but now champions it, underscoring a shift in legislative dynamics.
Despite strong opposition from religious leaders, who regard assisted suicide as undermining the value of life, Dalia urges ongoing dialogue with the governor’s office. As the bill progresses to the state Senate, hope for broader acceptance grows amid shifting political landscapes.
