Southern Utah Athletics Department Under Title IX Investigation
Southern Utah University’s athletics department is now under scrutiny for possible Title IX violations across multiple sports, according to a report from Brett McMurphy of Action Network. Doug Knuth, who previously served as Nevada’s athletic director, has been with Southern Utah since December 2022. His tenure at Nevada from 2013 to 2022 ended amidst similar Title IX concerns, leading to his departure with 14 months remaining on his contract.
Reports allege that Knuth faced four Title IX investigations during his time at Nevada, focusing on inequalities related to facilities, recruiting, and treatment of athletes, among other issues. While some allegations were unsubstantiated, including claims of inappropriate behavior, concerns regarding hiring practices favoring men over equally qualified women were noted.
An anonymous source described the atmosphere under Knuth’s leadership as "toxic." Details of the specific violations at Southern Utah remain unclear. Under Knuth’s leadership, Nevada secured ten Mountain West championships, appreciating his hiring of successful coaches like Eric Musselman in men’s basketball and Jay Johnson in baseball. However, persistent Title IX issues ultimately led to his exit from the Wolf Pack. The ramifications of this new investigation for Southern Utah remain to be seen.
