Las Vegas, NV – Nov. 5, 2024 – A notable shift in voting trends has emerged within the Asian American community in Nevada, with approximately 60% casting their ballots for President Trump over Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. This marks a significant change from the previous election, where over 60% favored Joe Biden.
Pauline Lee, a daughter of immigrants and active Republican, highlights concerns over illegal immigration, stating it impacts the resources allocated to American citizens. Similarly, Las Vegas City Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske agrees, stressing that many Asian Americans feel disadvantaged by college admissions processes that prioritize ethnicity over merit.
Economic pressures, particularly rising gas prices and the housing market crisis, have also influenced this political pivot. Allen-Palenske noted that homeownership, once attainable in Las Vegas, has become increasingly difficult. Historian James Zarsadiaz points to this economic strain felt by many Asian Americans in the hospitality and gaming industries as a contributing factor.
Local teacher Rachel Puaina supports Trump’s tariffs and immigration reforms, deeming them necessary for fair treatment of immigrants. “They did it the right way, they went through the process,” she stated, reflecting a sentiment shared by many in the community.
However, not all share this view. Concerns about Trump’s deportation policies loom large for some, causing fear among naturalized citizens regarding their status and that of their family members. A participant at a recent cultural festival expressed anxiety about potential deportations, showcasing the uncertainty facing many in the community.
While nationwide, there has been a 6-point shift toward Trump among Asian American voters, questions remain about whether he can sustain this support as discontent regarding his policies emerges.
