Nevada Men’s Tennis Season Wraps Up with Promising Highlights
The Nevada Wolf Pack men’s tennis team concluded its 2024-25 season last Thursday, marking a notable chapter in their athletic journey. Following a challenging 6-14 record in the previous season and the departure of star players Matheo Coupu and Loris Zisswiller, expectations weren’t sky-high. However, under coach Sylvain Malroux, known for elevating team performance, rebounding was anticipated.
The Wolf Pack finished the season with a respectable 13-10 overall record and a 2-4 mark in the Mountain West (MW) Conference, tying for fourth place out of seven teams. Their playoff campaign ended with a tough loss to Boise State in the MW Championship semifinals.
Player of the year, Youssef Kadiri, made history as the first Nevada player to qualify for the NCAA Tournament as an individual, coming close to adding a doubles berth. He excelled during the fall season, clinching the NCAA spot by defeating No. 92 Dzianis Zharyn of Washington. Kadiri’s impressive record included 25 wins in singles and a remarkable 30 in doubles, primarily alongside Lucas Hammond, earning All-MW honors in both categories.
Highlighting their season, Nevada delivered a standout 4-1 victory against Montana, a team with a 19-6 record. However, their tight match against Boise State in the MW Tournament revealed the potential within the squad, as they rallied to bring the score to 3-3 before narrowly losing.
Overall, Nevada’s season earned a C+ grade. The team showcased resilience and highlighted Kadiri and Hammond’s talents, although fell short of their prior championship form. With significant player losses, including Kadiri and Hammond, the road ahead may involve rebuilding. Freshman Max Contet offers a promising foundation for the future as they strategize for the upcoming season.
